The Memorial Signs for Julie Weinmann, Siegmund Hellmann and Carry Brachvogel

Julie Weinmann lead a bourgeois life, was involved in several foundations for social causes and, together with her husband, hosted many artists in her villa on Lake Starnberg. Today, this villa is known as Haus Buchenried of the Volkshochschule München. Julie Weinmann spent the last months of her life in Carry Brachvogel's flat, where she died in 1936.

After the death of her husband, Carry (Karoline) Brachvogel had to look after her young children alone. To earn a living, she began to write and published over 40 novels, biographies and articles as a successful author. She was chairwoman of the Munich Association for Women's Interests for decades before the National Socialists forced her to resign and she had to leave the association.

Her brother Prof Dr Siegmund Hellmann also lived with her. After the National Socialists forced him to give up his professorship in Leipzig in 1933, he returned to Munich and lived with his sister Carry Brachvogel. In July 1942, the siblings were deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto, where they both died a short time later, due to the terrible conditions there.

On Thursday, 11 July 2024, a memorial service for Carry (Karoline) Brachvogel, Julie Weinmann and Prof. Dr Siegmund Hellmann was held at the Seidlvilla. Gabriele Wiesmüller from the Seidlvilla welcomed those present, and City Councillor Stefan Jagel gave a welcoming address on behalf of the Lord Mayor of the City of Munich. Dr h.c. mult. Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, recalled that the expulsion of the Jews took place before the eyes of their fellow citizens. The initiator of the memorials, Dr Eva Strauß from Stattreisen München e.V., presented the biographies. Thomas Schütte, head of the literary archive of the Monacensia in the Hildebrandhaus, presented parts of Carry Brachvogel's legacy and Christian Haager from Haus Buchenried of the Munich Adult Education Centre read from Julie Weinmann's guest book, in which many contemporary artists had signed their names. Finally, Thomas Rock from District Committee 4 - Schwabing-West emphasised the importance of active commitment to the memory of the victims of Nazi persecution in view of the alarming electoral success of right-wing extremist parties in the European elections. Tabea Well (violin) and Anna-Sophia Kraus (violin) provided the musical framework for the event.

Afterwards, the Memorial Signs for Carry Brachvogel, Julie Weinmann and Prof. Dr Siegmund Hellmann were placed at their former home.
