On Holocaust Remembrance Day and Memorial Day in German football, FC Bayern München commemorates two of its former members and their families:
The merchant Wilhelm Neuburger lived with his wife Irene and their two daughters at Innstraße 18. An enthusiastic sportsman, Wilhelm Neuburger was a member of FC Bayern München, played in a tennis club and belonged to the Bavarian Ski Association. In 1936, the family emigrated to Amsterdam. After the Nazis occupied the Netherlands, they deported the Neuburger family to Camp Westerbork in January 1943. From there, the SS deported the family to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in January 1944. Irene and Wilhelm Neuburger were murdered there. Their two daughters survived the concentration camp.
Hugo and Hedwig Railing lived in Munich with their two children. Hugo Railing ran the company ‘Hahn und Bach’ together with his brother and was the owner of ‘Münchner Textildruckerei GmbH’. The brothers were dedicated members of FC Bayern München. Their family business was expropriated in 1938 and Hugo Railing was arrested. In 1942, the Gestapo deported Hedwig and Hugo Railing to the Piaski ghetto. Hedwig Railing died there. Hugo Railing was deported to the Sobibor extermination camp and murdered there. Their children were able to emigrate to Switzerland and Great Britain.
