August Levi and his wife Sofie lived in Saarlouis with their three children Heinz, Johanna Helene and Lore. After the annexation of the Saar region by the German Reich, the Levi couple had to sell their property for far less than it was worth. After the outbreak of the war, the Levi family was forced to move to Munich and separated from each other:
The parents lived in a room at Tengstraße 32, their son Heinz in a home in Hohenzollernstraße. After an apprenticeship their elder daughter Johanna Helene had to do forced labour in the Flachsröste Lohhof and was forced to live in the camp there. The youngest daughter, Lore, who was a small child born in 1935, lived with a lawyer's family. In 1941, August and Sofie Levi together with their three children were deported to Kaunas and murdered there by the SS.
In memory of the Levi family, a memorial service was held on 20 October 2022 in front of the parents' former home at Tengstraße 32. Letters from Sophie Levi were read out and speakers included City Councillor Nimet Gökmenoğlu, representing the Lord Mayor of the City of Munich, and Dr Eva Strauß, Managing Director of Stattreisen München e.V. and initiator of the Memorial Signs.
