Relatives and the Mayor

Benno Neuburger worked as a real estate agent and married Anna Einstein in 1907. Their two children Johanna and Fritz were able to emigrate to the USA in 1937 and 1938. During Kristallnacht, Benno Neuburger was arrested, forced to give up his business and deported to Dachau concentration camp, where he was imprisoned for several weeks. After his release, the Neuburger couple were financially dependent on the help of their children in the USA.

Benno Neuburger sent anonymous postcards denouncing Hitler's murderous policies against the Jews. In March 1941, Anna and Benno Neuburger were forced to move into the barracks of the so-called ‘Judensiedlung Milbertshofen’. A week later, Benno Neuburger was arrested by the Gestapo. He was sentenced to death for high treason and executed on 18 September 1942. Anna Neuburger was deported to Theresienstadt in July 1942 and deported from there to the Treblinka extermination camp in September, where she was murdered on 19 September 1942, one day after her husband's execution.

On Monday, 11 July 2022, a memorial service for the Neuburger couple was held at Villa Stuck. Mayor Katrin Habenschaden opened the event, followed by a speech by Prof Dr Juliane Sagebiel from the Liberal Jewish Community of Munich Beth Shalom. Prof Dr Bernward Doerner spoke about the lives of Anna and Benno Neuburger. Bruce Neuburger spoke on behalf of the family and young family members read from letters written by Anna and Benno Neuburger. Finally, Eva Tyrell (cello) and Johannes Trägner-Born (piano) played Henriette Bosman's Impressions No.2 ‘Nuit Calme’.
Afterwards, the Memorial Signs for Anna and Benno Neuburger were placed at their former home at Trogerstraße 44, accompanied by Jörg Spengler from the Au-Haidhausen district committee, and Cantor Nikola David from Beth Shalom Jewish Community Munich.
