Memorial Signs for Paula and Arthur Dreyer, Ludwig Frank and Hugo Rothschild

Paula and Arthur Dreyer
The physician Dr. med. Arthur Dreyer and his wife, Paula Dreyer, lived at Johann-von-Werth-Strasse 2. In 1940, their landlady terminated their lease. They were forced to auction off all their furniture and move into a boarding house in Goethestraße, where Paula Dreyer died after a few weeks. Dr. Dreyer was then deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto, where he died in 1943 due to the catastrophic conditions.

Ludwig Frank
Dr. phil. Ludwig Frank was a professor of mathematics and physics at the Rupprecht-Oberrealschule and lived at Johann-von-Werth-Straße 3. A colleague unjustly denounced him in 1938. Nevertheless, he was arrested on suspicion of "Rassenschande” (“racial defilement"). In 1940 he was deported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, where he died the same year, under unexplained circumstances.

Hugo Rothschild
The lawyer Hugo Rothschild lived with his two children Erna and Fritz at Johann-von-Werth-Straße 4. During the November pogrom in 1938 he was arrested and severely abused, and deported to the Dachau concentration camp. After he was released in December 1938, he was allowed to work for a few more years, at least as a so-called consultant and exclusively for Jewish clients. At the beginning of 1945, the Gestapo arrested Hugo Rothschild and took him to the Dachau concentration camp again, where he was murdered shortly after.

In honour of these former residents of Johann-von-Werth-Strasse, a memorial service was held on Monday, 24 October 2022 at the Neuhauser Trafo. Speeches were given by City Councillor Stefan Jagel, representing the Lord Mayor of the City of Munich, Dr. Charlotte Knobloch, President of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, Ingrid Reuther, initiator of the Memorial Signs, Richard Lauchner, grandson of Hugo Rothschild, and Anna Hanusch from the District Committee 09 - Neuhausen-Nymphenburg. Afterwards, the memorial signs were installed in Johann-von-Werth-Straße at house numbers 2, 3, and 4.
